Taking Care of Each Other!
It takes a village to raise a child & at The Lean on Me Project, we take that very seriously. It takes will, time, and patience to help launch children/teens on a positive path and sometimes a little extra help can be very satisfactory!
Listening to youth is critical to understanding how they are are feeling, what they are thinking, and how to connect them with useful services. When we start young, we can support sooner and better. What we have learned is that students are very sleepy, filled with anxiety and questions, not getting enough quality sleep, and are not sure about who supports them the most. The hope is that by the LOM team consistently showing up and the students consistently showing up, that a level of trust builds and that can lend itself for possible positive outcomes in academics and mental health.
The Lean on Me (LOM) Project has had the honor of training 5th graders who are nominated by their teachers as being kind, compassionate, and mindful. The students attend a weekly training to learn and practice mentorship topics and skills such as organization, social interactions, wellness, and problem solving. Students are paired with 3rd graders to offer reassurance, increase self-esteem and self-awareness. Schools choose their LOM teacher or staff ambassadors, and we collaborate on the topics and delivery. Helping create student leaders = more confident human beings!
We have the honor of collaborating with principals and assistant principals to identify students who need and want more academic support during the school day. Each school provides space, and the LOM team beautifies it so students feel at ease in the learning environment. A coach dedicates their time several days a week to different schools to provide small group or individual meet ups with identified students. In addition LOM is teamed up with COMPEER, the friendship match organization, to provide 1-1 online tutoring for students who struggle with organization and need support to navigate coursework.
